Latest News Update: Dec. 31, 2009 It was 10:48 AM PST in Southern California when a sudden earthquake of 5.9 magnitude struck Baja California. The shake was felt in some parts of Mexico and Southern California. Not one but two earthquake struck Baja. EUREKA, Calif. – A powerful offshore earthquake that struck near the Northern California coast left a hodgepodge of debris for communities to sort through Sunday but spared residents any serious injury. The 6.5 magnitude temblor hit at about 4:27 p.m. PST Saturday and was centered in the Pacific about 22 miles west of Ferndale. It was felt in towns more than 300 miles south into central California and as far north as central Oregon, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Ferndale is about 240 miles north of San Francisco. EUREKA (AP) – Residents of a Northern California county gingerly cleaned up yesterday after the area dodged a catastrophe, escaping a 6.5 magnitude earthquake with little more than bumps, cuts and broke glass. Eureka's Bayshore Mall had entrances blocked off as engineers surveyed for damage. Area bridges suffered some bent rails, and local stores reported messy aisles where bottles and jars flew from shelves and shattered, authorities said. Eureka residents were still mopping up Monday in the aftermath of Saturday's magnitude 6.5 earthquake 25 miles off the coast. More than 30 aftershocks were recorded in the hours after the quake. Two - magnitudes 3.1 and 3.5 - were recorded Monday. U.S. Geological Survey scientists have warned that the likelihood is high for more aftershocks, with a possibility of further damage. MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) - A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Luzon on Tuesday evening, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. An earlier report by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) initially placed the quake's magnitude at 5.0. The quake's epicenter was located 30 kilometers southeast of Olongapo City, at a depth of 142 km. The quake struck at around 6:54 p.m., the Phivolcs added.
