The following is a copy of a newsletter article I wrote a few months ago. I thought it might be useful to the general public:
Recently, I have had the pleasure of being part of a Job Seeking Skills class at Southwest Applied Technology College . Our instructor, Mrs. Debbie Drake, set aside an hour a week for eight weeks to teach us about the importance of “soft skills” - skills that are not typical taught in the classroom. Such skills are very important to finding a job. Along with About.com: Job Searching, I have brought forward a few of my favorite tips to help you succeed. Before The Interview With the current state of the economy, jobs are in scarce supply. With every open position comes a string of job seekers that may number into the hundreds. In situations like these, you must put your best foot forward to be noticed by a company. Often, the difference between being an applicant and an employee is how you approach an employer. Dress for Success – With the competitiveness of the job market, first impressions are vital. When you go to pick up an application or inquire about a job, you should dress in business casual clothing. This means a nice, neat pair of pants and a dress shirt or blouse. Ripped jeans and an old t-shirt do not send the same impression as khakis and a good shirt. Streamline Your Resume/Application— A resume should be a brief summary of relevant experiences and skills that qualify you for a job. The same can be said of an application. The following is a format for a basic resume. At the top of your resume, you should list your first and last name, complete address, phone number(s), and an email address that you check regularly (if you have one). The next section should be marked “Experience.” Here you will list your work history. Work history can include paid and volunteer jobs. For each job make sure to list company name, city and state where it is located, job title, and responsibilities. Try to be brief, listing the jobs main duties in a few words. For example, if you worked for a company sweeping, mopping, emptying trash, and wiping down tables, you can list your duties as “janitorial.” In the same way, if you cooked french fries and hamburgers, list your duties as “cook”. The idea is to offer a general idea of what you did at your job, not go into much detail. Resumes and applications are received in bulk and are scanned over employers do not have the time to read about everything single thing you have completed at your job. It's a wonderful article to know some details about the job interview tips. It helps candidates to know the details as what they have to do and what they have to prepare. As people get organized to attend the job interview they have to take care that their clothing is suitable for the sort of company which they will be interviewing with. This is the main point in any job interview as the first impression is the best impression.
