First, thanks for posting this subcategory, so we can post what we're doing to help ourselves and our neighbors through the recession. Of course I'm looking for extra work, penny pinching, paying off credit cards as quickly as possible, and following my own advice to trim expenses in every budget category (see my book.)
BUT... It's even better to help others get through this recession. Personally, I volunteer time at a local food bank and thrift store. The numbers of people needing extra help has significantly increased; we're seeing people who have never had to visit a food bank in their life. I also developed a web site listing resource assistance in my town. It shows where low-cost/no-cost clothing, food, medical, shelter, etc. can be found in our rural area. My family is struggling with making ends meet right now -- like everyone else -- but I'm finding that by helping my neighbors, the load is a little lighter for all of us.
